Headteacher's Fortnightly Update 29th November 24

6th Form Open Evening

It was lovely to see so many pupils and parents at our first Open Evening for the 6th Form.  We are committed to growing and developing our provision after Year 11 to make sure we can support our pupils having the best access to ‘A’ level and Level 3 qualifications without having to leave school.

As part of the Open Evening, our 6th Form ‘Newport County in the Community’ football provision was of keen interest to a large number of our pupils and visitors from other schools.  We are very proud of this part of our school, where, through the Football Programme, students have the chance to develop their teamwork, leadership, and communication skills, all while pursuing their passion for football alongside their academic studies. This hands-on experience will not only enhance their knowledge of the game but also prepare them for potential career opportunities in the sports industry. If you are interested in this amazing opportunity for your child to excel both academically and athletically please email Dave Lewis (Dave.lewis@newport-county.co.uk).

School meals price increase from January 2025

Our school meal provider Chartwells has informed the council that the cost of all school meals will be rising from the start of the new term in 2025.  From January, school meals in most of Newport’s secondary schools will be increasing by 18 pence per meal, from £2.95 to £3.13. The increase will affect pupils at Llanwern High School who do not receive free school meals.  We recognise this will be an added financial pressure on parents and carers and would encourage them to check whether they might be entitled to free school meals at www.newport.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/school-meals/free-school-meals

It is also worth noting that families who are eligible for free school meals can also apply for additional help with other school costs.

You can find out more at https://www.newport.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/school-meals/free-school-meals

If you are not in receipt of Free School Meals but think you are eligible and would like any help in accessing, please let us know so we can help.
