Windrush Celebration, October 11-16th
Events held over three days were a celebration of Windrush and multiculturalism at our school through poetry. 100 children were selected to participate in a series of spoken word poetry workshops facilitated by poet Duke Al Durham, along with teachers all of whom are descendants of the Windrush generation.
Participating pupils came from a variety of cultural backgrounds including African, Caribbean, Traveller and many other communities. Participants explored the histories of Windrush and their own relationships to the Windrush generation. Participants celebrated their own ancestry and the shared stories of community and belonging. They shared experiences and turned these into poetry, ultimately performing these stories on stage.
Participants also shared a buffet meal that celebrated the multicultural aspects of Windrush. Traditional Caribbean food was eaten alongside other cuisines, demonstrating the influences of many cultures in the history of the Caribbean and the British empire.
